OR Integration

Operating room technology is moving rapidly toward full integration of components and system and functions within the surgical suite, including control of environmental systems, surgical equipment, such as insufflators and endoscopy light sources. OR integration also forms the foundation for advanced capabilities, including telemedicine which relies on high-tech multimedia systems for audio and video communication. Increased integration and requires, however, that compatibility be maintained between various OR components, including both HD and SD imaging equipment.

For integration into the OR, HD systems must be compatible with a range of existing imaging technologies, including PACS, fluoro and X-ray systems, SD technology and others. Nevertheless, to ensure HD compatibility, existing integrated ORs may need to be rewired to accommodate routing of optical fiber cables and additional subsystems required for transmission of HD signals.

Another important consideration when implementing an HD imaging system within the integrated OR environment is compatibility of the imaging platform with future HD components to enhance workflow. New HD components that are introduced, such as new camera systems and CCUs or advanced display technologies must be easily accommodated by the installed platform to optimize the cost of ownership. Otherwise, adapting to new and innovative HD technologies may require expensive upgrades or the purchase of entirely new systems and components.
